Mount Kilimanjaro Expedition Jan 19th- 29th, 2013

Lemosho/Shira route via Barafu Track and Crater Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro, the “Mountain of Greatness”, Africa’s highest mountain (5895 meters) and also the tallest freestanding mountain in the world. The route I will guide my clients on is the longest, most remote and considered the most beautiful. It is also the best for acclimatisation. The track is one of the few where groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger as the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo, elephant and other big game animals. It approaches from the far West and has that ‘wilderness’ feel to it. This route goes around the southern side of the mountain and summits from Barafu via Stella Point.

The summit push will involve an initial target at Stella Point (5730m) with the summit (Uhuru) just another 40mins away. At Uhuru Peak, we will reach the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro (5895m) and the continent of Africa which is on the edge of the dormant Kibo volcano. The views of neighbouring Mt Meru will be fantastic.  From the summit, we will  make our descent to Crater Camp. There we can explore the Furtwangler Glacier and visit the rarely visited Ash Pit. We will experience a very cold night in the “Crater of Kili” but amazingly spectacular camping on the roof of Africa under the stars…magic! We will then witness the sunrise over Africa, above the clouds when we rise in the morning.
